Desk lamps that also charge, wake and play: are combination units worth it
Combination devices are judged by their weakest function. A four-in-one lamp is a good purchase if three of the four are things you would otherwise buy, and a poor one if you only wanted a good lamp.
Judge the light first
Everything else is secondary. Look for stated brightness in lumens, a colour temperature range, and whether dimming is stepless or in fixed steps. A lamp with three brightness steps and one colour temperature is a limited lamp with extra features bolted on.
For reading, 400 to 800 lumens at the surface is comfortable. For ambient bedside light, far less. A lamp that cannot go low enough is as much a problem as one that cannot go bright enough.
Colour temperature and evening use
Around 2700K is warm and appropriate near bedtime. 4000K is neutral. 5000K and above is daylight and is stimulating – useful at a desk in the morning, counterproductive at eleven at night.
A lamp that shifts across that range is genuinely more useful than one fixed anywhere in it, particularly if it lives in a bedroom that doubles as a workspace.
Flicker, and why it matters
Cheap LED drivers produce visible or near-visible flicker that causes eye strain over long sessions without being consciously noticed. A well-specified lamp will mention flicker-free or DC dimming; most will not mention it at all.
A rough test: point a phone camera at the lamp at its lowest brightness. Banding on the preview indicates flicker.
Wireless charging placement
A charging pad in a lamp base is convenient and constrained: it has to align with the phone’s coil, which means a raised lip or a marked position. Thick cases and metal plates for magnetic mounts will block it entirely.
Charging speed is usually modest, around 10W, and it generates heat next to where you sleep. That is fine, but it is not a fast charger.
The speaker is usually the weak link
A small driver in a lamp base is adequate for a podcast and unremarkable for music. If sound quality matters, a separate speaker is better in every way. If the speaker exists to play an alarm and a radio, it is entirely sufficient.
Check whether Bluetooth pairing is retained through a power cut – some units require re-pairing every time, which is quickly infuriating on a bedside table.
Alarm behaviour after a power cut
A bedside device that loses the time when power blips has failed at its main job. Units with a small backup cell keep the clock; units without reset to midnight and silently do not wake you.
This is rarely on the listing and is worth asking about for anything intended as an alarm.
App control versus physical controls
App control adds scheduling and scenes. It also means the lamp depends on a phone, an account and a server. The best implementations do both: full physical control on the unit, app for extras.
A lamp with touch-only controls and no app is simple and reliable. A lamp with app-only controls and one button is a liability the moment the app is discontinued.
Physical footprint
Combination units are larger than a plain lamp because they contain a charging coil, a speaker and a display. On a small bedside table, that footprint is the actual constraint, not the feature list.
Measure the table before, not after. Dimensions are always published.
When to buy separates instead
If you already own a good speaker and a charger, a plain lamp with excellent light quality will be better and cheaper. Combination units win when a small surface has to do several jobs and cable clutter is the problem being solved.
That is a genuine problem in a small apartment, which is why these devices sell. It is just worth being clear about which problem you are buying for.
